The anniversary of Revue d’Éthique et de Théologie Morale (RETM), founded by Albert Plé sixty years ago, is an opportunity to renew our interest in fundamental ethical questions. One of these is the Sermon on the Mount, a text characteristic of the New Testament. In what practical ways can this major episode in Scripture be put into practice? Stanley Hauerwas can guide us in our reading, but only after we have established the criteria for a specifically theological treatment of the relationship between the Bible and morals. Somewhat forgotten by both Catholics and Protestants following the Reformation, the Sermon on the Mount is today the object of numerous readings (F. Böckle, J. Jeremias, L. Cahill, J. Ansaldi, É. Fuchs, etc.). For his part, not only does Stanley Hauerwas strive to reveal the Christology in Matthew 5, but he also draws on Jesus’s teaching for concrete ethics.
