The relationships between democracy and demagogy are currently being revived.The aim here is to evidence the link between language and politics, a link which is implied by the theme of demagogy. The demagogue’s basic flaw lies in his unwaveringbelief that he is the people’s truth incarnate ; platonician and hobbesian criticisms of demagogy serve as a backdrop. Who is ultimately entitled to claiming ownership of the word “people“ ? In this respect, Pïerre Bourdieu’s self coined concept of “symbolic domination” proves useful. Confronting the demagogue’s regime and that of the expert may also offer fresh perspectives.
