It is no longer simply a few isolated whistle-blowers but indeed thousands of researchers and hundreds of publications that are alerting us to the coming environmental catastrophe. Nevertheless, nothing is being done and we are doing little to move forward. What is it about humans as a species that makes this so? This is the first question that we will ask, seeing that we hardly deserve our scientific classification as sapiens. Then, we will ask what sort of civilisation permits the destructiveness that we experience. We will then turn to the “technoscientific paradigm” evoked by the encyclical Laudato si’.
