Increasing inequalities between North and South make international solidarity ever more necessary. Helping, however, is not easy and the most common gut reactions are not always the most appropriate. Thus, gifts may not only be useless but also harmful. Polluting, adding to the clutter, destructive of the local economy, gifts have effects often unknown to the donor. This guide deals with these various potential negative impacts and raises awareness of the deep ambiguities of this type of solidarity. Also, as making gifts is not always the solution, it offers numerous suggestions on how to express solidarity in a responsible and effective manner.
