The enchantment of numbers and charts had captivated business life to such an extent that it resulted in a certain amount of damage. Fortunately this damage brought people to their senses. This enthusiasm has now been transferred to the world of research under the guise of a supposedly ‘learned’ word : bibliometrics. The number of publications, references, scientists’ h-index, and the ranking of journals delights research administrators and those researchers who publish lots of articles but lack creativity. Are we running the risk of seriously hindering ground-breaking research because the emphasis is on publishing ?
