The French system of higher education and research pattern is trapped in a dead end. Its national organization by disciplines as well as the long standing division between universities and “Grandes écoles,” Higher education institutions and research organizations increasingly conflicts with the organizational turn of universities. We deal here with origins and current consequences of this situation and discuss conditions for getting out of the pitfall.
