A new reading of Léon Bourgeois (1851-1925) provides an understanding of the political and theoretical basis for the rebirth of the universities under the Third Republic. An inspirational source for radical socialism, he was Minister of Public Education and advocated the partial autonomy of the universities, in order to foster independence of knowledge, interdisciplinarity of research, and the democratization of society.
