Those last decades French University has become always more challenged by other forms of superior education, private or public, 'classes préparatoires', IUT, BTS and all level schools. This competition has not been clearly seen as long as the demographic trend brought each year more and more new students. But the demographic inversion of the trend by the mid 90s now displays a swift diminutions of university students which theatens the very future of French University. The article presents a plea for a comprehensive and coherent reform of the whole system of Higher Education.
