This article considers the relation between religion, democracy and Human Rights (HR) with respect to the following arguments : 1. The opposition between ‘right’ and ‘left’ is the virtualization and the symbolisation of civil war as political conflict. 2. HR form a secular religion which makes possible this virtualization of civil war in a way acceptable by non-Christian world religions. 3. The ‘clash of civilizations’ is in fact a similar virtualization of religious wars. The global acceptance of the idea of religious tolerance and of the HR frame mean not the decline of Western influence but rather the globalization of its secular religion within which all other religious or secular values must be integrated.
