Many psychoanalysts today support the hypothesis of a ‘de-symbolization’ of social relations which would lead to the advent of a new form of subject. This type of analysis continues in the line of Freud as much as with Lacan as to the destiny of the subject within culture, as it also agrees with a certain number of arguments made by sociology, especially that of Durkheim. Hence the question of the future of the ‘symbolic debt’ towards an Other within the frame of capitalism appears central. This article asks if it is not better to abandon the hypothesis of de-symbolization in favour of the more fecund hypothesis of a mutation of the symbolic order. This supposes that we recognize the fully symbolic nature of the capitalist economy.
