Reproduced here is the closing chapter of Jean-Claude Michéa’s latest essay, Le complexe d’Orphée. La gauche, les gens ordinaire et la religion du progrès (The Orpheus Complex. The Left, Ordinary People and the Religion of Progress) (Climats, Paris, 2011). In his usual sharp style, the author shows how opposing capitalism’s inherent excessive tendencies is illusory. In order to develop, capitalism needed to found itself on pre-capitalist moral resources which it can now shed, leaving us without safegard.
