This paper will show that the individualistic assumptions of psychoanalytic theory and its dogmatic tendency have kept it from taking into account new ethnographic data, which might have allowed it, in particular, to correct the mistaken conception of relations between the sexes and between generations that is inherent in the Oedipus complex. But it will also maintain that some of Freud’s intuitions still suggest fruitful directions for anthropological research.
