Nature provides us with materials, food and energy. It is also a model for grandeur, diversity, complex organisation, splendour, sensitivity, and for the laws of causality. Humanity creates possibilities in addition to nature, sparking the question : ‘Must all that that is possible be realized ?’ This contribution reflects on this important question by asking what role for humankind with respect to a cosmic totality.
