This article combines ethnographic material and philosophical discussion to propose a critique of the commoditization process of solidarity. The modern project involves the practice of measure guided by the intention to make everything measurable. Hence what we receive from nature is not what it gives to us since our appreciation of this is cast within the logics of economic rationality. The contemporary neurosis of monetary quantification has drawn us ever further from another project which would have consisted in the qualification of the relations that unite us to the future of the planet. By substituting quantity to quality, we have renounced to valuing the gift offered and have considered instead only the quantity needed to realise and maintain the provision of a service. This approach leads to a critique of the notion of utility, since if we define what needs to be preserved in terms of utility, then what needs to be preserved is to a large extent determined by these instruments of measure.
