CAIRN-INT.INFO : International Edition

Integral to nature today are the instruments that examine, partition, quantify and qualify it. In the name of the preservation of life, various instruments and devices are being developed that use a large mass of information stemming from the growing number of databanks relative to nature. This dynamic involves environmentalist groups which are the main producers of such data in France. In spite of efforts aimed at rationalizing the collection of data, these remain shaped by the values of the collectors as well as by their rapport to nature. In this article, we argue that this rapport to nature is twofold : the first presents itself in more objectivist terms and privileges scientific and management concerns, while the second is more subjectivist and characterised by a proximity and familiarity to nature, and calls to less scientific knowledge. This entails a complex situation shaped by these tensions within the database.
