The following ethnological research depicts the singular non-commercial transactions system in place in a village located in the Red River delta, North Vietnam, while aiming to determine to what extent empirical data resonates with existing theory on gift and reciprocity. The analysis of characteristic features of the non-commercial transactions show a system of ceremonial gift-giving based on mutual aid, gesture reciprocity, and moral debt. Their effects are mainly to create and strengthen affective relationships (quan hẹ tình cảm). In the Vietnamese context, where State and Market cannot produce enough trust to allow exchanges and to regulate actors’ relationships, “bonding gifts” – as well as the affective connections they foster – are determining societal factors in rural Vietnam.
