‘What does nature give ?’The question could appear out-dated as the rational language of economics prefers that we speak of what is given in terms of return on investment. It seems to project on nature a form of anthropocentricism that portrays it as a cornucopia for mankind. Yet the expression resists economical abstraction and questions the logics of exchange which are dominant today by starting from a statement of abundance rather than rarity. Is this not what underlies the shift from referring to nature in the terms of natural resources to those of environmental services ?
