Based on an ethnographic research, this study emphasizes the importance of primary sociability between elderly people as they meet everyday in a shopping mall. Basically structured around verbal interactions, these discursive bonds appear as “gift-based relations.” Far from superficial or frivolous, this ritualized chatting turns out to be especially substantial as to the symbolic recognition it allows. The anthropologic perspective relying on gift brings out what words symbolically offer and what gift and reciprocity tell us about the relationships between these low-income elderly people.
