Several analysts of changes in firms have been tackling the question of the relations between authority and human resource management devices for about fifteen years. This paper aims at shedding light on this matter from an economic standpoint. Taking contractual theories applied to human resource management as our starting point, we study the way these approaches consider human resource management devices in relation with authority. In reaction to some of their limits, we propose an analytical framework highlighting a fundamental ambivalence relation between authority and human resource management devices. This analysis enriches some topical debates on intra-firm authority from an economic point of view.
