Pregnancy and birth in France are framed by institutional measures based on mixed norms. While medical knowledge prevails, it has been in competition with psychoanalytical approaches since the 1970s. This tension mediated by different professional bodies (doctors, midwives, nursing assistants) finds its current expression in the division of management labour and in the adaptation of professionals’ practices to the various categories of mothers.
