With Nicolas Sarkozy leading the French conservative party (UMP) and the prospect of the presidential election coming up in 2007, the Jeunes populaires (JP, i.e. “Grassroots/popular Youth ”, the UMP organization for members under 30) came center-stage in the party’s “activist ” show. Based on a questionnaire survey conducted at JP summer schools in September 2006 and on various fieldwork, this article concerns the activation of a short-term activist campaign by the UMP and JP and its effects on political involvement among these right-wing youths. After highlighting various practical and symbolic aspects of this “activist ” identity, we examine patterns in the social division of labor inside this youth organization and in the selection of its leaders.
