This overview of research on family solidarity in Quebec starts with a summary of the family dynamics that developed from the middle of the 19th century, in the context of migration towards American factories as well as the project to colonize the regions of Quebec. The strength and durability across the decades of family solidarity in Quebec, which successive researchers from the various social sciences have consistently underlined, are now being challenged by more recent changes in family structures and, among other factors, by the challenge of Quebec’s ageing population. These changes also need to be taken into account in the development of family policies. In this area, the issue of reconciling respect for the limits of family solidarity and recognition of its contribution to people’s everyday lives seems broadly similar on both sides of the Atlantic.
