Intergenerational transfers received from parents, whether it is in the form of regular aid, donations or even inheritance, have a very significant impact on the recipients’ lifestyle. We propose here to measure the consequences of these monetary gifts on the housing of young adults. The study was carried out based on data from the Financial Assets survey carried out in 1992 in France, which comprises very detailed information on the history of received family transfers. It reveals that, in most cases, these transmissions are used for financing the recipient’s primary or secondary home. The results of the econometric analysis show that the received transfers noticeably increase the probability of becoming an owner of their primary or secondary home at a certain age. They also reduce the time needed to save up the money required to attain the property and increase the value of owned property.
