CAIRN-INT.INFO : International Edition
English

The purpose of this article is to make an international comparison of antihypertensive drugs based on five European countries (France, Germany, Spain, Italy and the United Kingdom). Firstly, we will present global indicators : expenditure and the number of standard units per inhabitant, the number of daily treatments per 1000 inhabitants and the average cost of a standard unit. Secondly, the heterogeneous nature of the consumption thus observed is more finely analysed, using France as a reference, by calculating price, quantity and structural indices. Thirdly, structural indices themselves are broken down into categories - firstly according to therapeutic group and then according to generic status. The findings highlight a price level and above all a consumption structure for generic/originator drugs which is unfavourable for France.
