The questionnaire known as the "Moreno Question" was invented by Juan Linz in the context of the Spanish democratic transition. Contrary to injunctions by nationalist movements that forced a clear and unique identity (you are this or that, completely or not at all), Linz?s idea consisted in giving respondents a chance to position themselves in relation to the two belongings that are at stake in the situation of a political conflict. Moreover, respondents can not only accept or neglect these belongings but also combine them and specify the mix in a questionnaire equipped with the relevance and simplicity that have made it successful far beyond the Spanish case.
