This exploratory research raises the issue of the contradiction between the desire for consumption and the requirement for bank debt. It traces the evolution of practices experimented by European retail banks to attract, retain, and “re-enchant” their customers and leads. It analyzes the new banking practices in the light of the philosophical concepts of the “indebted man” and “desiring-machine” put forward by Deleuze and Guattari.
