This article begins by showing the paradoxes of description: a neutral and objective description is an impossibility; it can take various forms; it can expand or shrink (accordion effect). It then turns to the possible scientific role of description, which is essentially to challenge commonly accepted ideas and theories. Finally, it provides elements on how to construct a description for theoretical purposes, which implies adopting a minimal, excluding point of view, and then elaborating a series of other points of view adding, one by one, the elements initially excluded.
