In a context of increasing health expenditures, drug scandals, and the emergence of chronic polypathological patients, prescriptions furnished by general practitioners are regularly questioned. In order to understand more about the daily management of polypathological patients, 60 practitioners have been selected to participate in focus groups and peer discussions on their practice, diagnosis, and the requirements of prescriptions for chronic polypathological patients. Results show the complex networks in which doctor-patient relationships take place. Our conclusion is that improving the support provided to these ambulatory patients requires major reorganizations of the healthcare system, and cultural changes in the way healthcare professionals cooperate with each other.
