Maya Deren, the American film-maker and spokeswoman for the post-war American experimental cinema, is known in France for her films about dance and also as a character of legend, but we often forget her theoretical work. Refering to the theory of Alain-Alcide Sudre in Dialogues with Maya Deren, the author is interested in Maya Deren confronting her conception of the cinema as autonomous art (against documentary cinema) to anthropology.
