Maya Deren, the American film-maker and spokeswoman for the post-war American experimental cinema, is known in France for her films about dance and also as a character of legend, but we often forget her theoretical work. Refering to the theory of Alain-Alcide Sudre in Dialogues with Maya Deren, the author is interested in Maya Deren confronting her conception of the cinema as autonomous art (against documentary cinema) to anthropology. By filming the Haitian Voodoo dances, does Maya Deren sees herself as an artist or as an ethnographer?
