Propositions intending to shape a veritable sociology of cinema have marked the intellectual history of the 20th century. The most remarkable of these is undoubtedly that of Siegfried Kracauer who tried to reply appropriately to the question “How should we consider the cinema film when we look at it through the eyes of a sociologist?”. It is this approach and its repercussions that this paper will look at in general. An approach and its consequences which will be illustrated by the multiple angles of analysis that a cinematic work such as Star Wars by George Lucas is capable of raising today, in the opinion of those who are attempting to define the place held by cinema as a popular art within our society.
