The article examines the social conditions for farmers to embrace and implement organic agricultural methods. Based on an ethnographic survey of market gardeners, it examines the contexts in which the willingness to break with “conventional” professional practices is developed and expressed. The study shows the importance of a high level of training, as well as (original or acquired) social distance from the traditional bodies of socialization in agriculture, namely the family and professional agricultural organizations.
