Adopting a multidimensional definition of social cohesion and using the data from Luxembourg in the European Values Study of 2008, this paper aims to understand to what extent work, understood as an activity, a social representation, and a condition of existence, contributes to maintaining and even strengthening cohesive attitudes and behavior in individuals. It shows that, contrary to what national and international authorities tend to say, it is not enough to create jobs and to encourage the development of a specific work ethic to increase individuals’ potential for cohesion, but that it is necessary to create interesting jobs, with good material conditions, that make it possible to reconcile the various spheres of the individual’s life in a harmonious way.
