Evaluations in primary schools are part of a general context of the evaluation of public services required by the new public management in order to improve performance and efficiency. Because of the uncertainty and tension tied to it, the evaluation is an ordeal for the teachers, as it contradicts their conception of the profession and certain deeply held principles. These tensions are expressed in a fight consisting of both words and actions, individually or collectively. The timetable and the structure (the questions asked of students, the grading scale, the types of measurements, the effectiveness and efficiency) are the subject of the dispute. These tensions are often proof of a fear of the development of a market mindset at school.
