This article contributes to research on the relations between minority groups and public space through an analysis of the Islamic-French online media portal SaphirNews.com, one of the four most visited media sources of its kind in France. The article first presents the French context and its “Muslim problem.” Then, it describes the process that led to the birth of the media and provides an analysis of its content as well as information on its readership. The media is also placed in the context of the French Islamic landscape. The manner of functioning and the content of this media yield much knowledge on the internal diversity within the Islamic-French community. This provides a basis for questioning the kind of participation in the public sphere that is occurring, relying on Dewey’s approach to the public in so doing.
