For the past 15 years, the carers of people in need of regular care have been subjected to a new visibility. Based on the results of a qualitative survey on family carers of relatives affected by Alzheimer’s disease, this article investigates the life experience of carers who provide daily support to elderly relatives (a partner or parent). After analyzing the notion of intensity of care, the authors focus on the complex role of family carers – who do not constitute a homogeneous category – and study the daily experience of their investment in their elderly relatives. The article explores the emotional dimension of the care relationship between the carer and the cared for, as well as between the carer and all other people, professionals or not, who contribute to the care arrangements. This emotional and organizational dimension of care, analyzed in a qualitative perspective, appears as a key element of the modulation of its intensity.
