This article examines how agents of the Interior Ministry have turned Islam in France into a problematic social fact, focusing more specifically on how this construction of reality has been used to designate French imams as possible allies in the resolution of problems associated with the Muslim faith. It subsequently shows how these “ministers” have progressively become targets of public policies that call into question the practical relationship of Interior Ministry agents to legal and narrative laicism.
