This article has two goals. On the one hand, it proposes a statistical test of the hypothesis of structural homologies. In La Distinction, the global graphics (Bourdieu, 1979, pp.?140?141) were made by hand from several partial analyses (de Saint Martin, 2013, pp.?29?44). Thanks to the survey “Pratiques Culturelles des Français,” conducted in?2008 by the Ministry of Culture, and through a Multiple Factor Analysis (FMA), it is now possible to observe within a unique set of calculations the morphology of four different cultural spaces (television, music, cinema, reading), as well as the cultural spaces of the bourgeois, intermediate, and popular classes. Are their underlying principles similar? Are any observed changes interpretable? On the other hand, this statistical analysis updates the descriptions of tastes offered by La Distinction, which mainly concerns the 1960s. It also makes it possible to put on the agenda the definition of the “middle” of the social space by showing that there are many reasons for a taste modality of being in the middle region of the social space. Thus, the article questions the possibility of statistically objectifying a world of tastes that would be specific to a “middle” class (between popular and bourgeois classes).
