Whereas the generalization of automobiles became a sociological research topic in the 1970s, studies remained blind to gender differentiations. However, at that time, women were widely kept aside from this massification. Yet, women’s appropriation of the automobile has been ambivalent, allowing us to question the meaning of converging mobility practices among men and women. If the automobile has often been thought of as a means of emancipation, it can also extend gendered roles within the household. Just as household appliances can intensify domestic work instead of diminishing it, the automobile can become the vehicle for increased domestic work. We will try to address that question by analyzing data from Insee transportation surveys between 1980 and 2008, the rise of driver’s license and the uses of automobile among women.
