The report preliminary to the 2015 Act on the adaptation of society to aging contains the following statement: “There is a time when one is ‘elderly but not old’ corresponding to the age of retirement and to grandparenthood and a time considered as old age when fragilities appear and, finally, a time of ‘great age.’” This description corresponds to widespread social representations that are culturally grounded and give a partial and deformed view of reality. They make aging a period of decline characterized by a succession of periods and social roles that disappear ineluctably when fragilities and disabilities appear.
