Esprit is a news journal dealing with current events, committed to presenting a variety of topics (international relations, the evolutions of capitalism, the transformations of religious thought, urbanism and architecture, contemporary philosophy) with intellectual accuracy. The journal is independent, financially, politically and religiously, and lives from subscriptions and sales.
The aim of this monthly publication (10 issues a year) is to cover news with hindsight. Although Esprit focuses on French events, its contributors always take into account major developments in international relations. Founded in 1932 by Emmanuel Mounier, Esprit has a long intellectual tradition: in addition to helping with developing existentialist and personalist theories and being involved in anti-colonial activities, it contributed to the creation of a non-Marxist French left wing, gave its support to Eastern European dissidents at the time of the iron curtain, and is committed today – as when it was created, in the midst of the Great Depression – to analysing the global crisis and to crafting the intellectual tools that can enable us to navigate it. Esprit has published authors like Hannah Arendt, Frantz Fanon, Leopold Sedar Senghor, Chris Marker, Paul Ricœur, Claude Lefort, etc.
The journal orients its readers in contemporary debates, investigates our democratic form of life and promotes justice. A people’s university, it drives to make sense of our global modernity. Each issue is made of an editorial, a « chorus » on international news, a selection of articles on a main theme, and reviews of recent cultural works. The journal is independent, cosmopolitan and committed to justice.
