In the Star Wars film series, George Lucas made us aware of the dark side of human nature. This dark side is well researched in academic literature as well as in more classic literature. Essentially, these are actions based on fear, anger, hatred, passion, and aggression, which in turn produce win-lose situations and, with retaliation, lose-lose situations. If this dark side is well known, what can we do it to remove it from decision-making? While I have long asked myself this question, it has gained new urgency from research into artificial intelligence that shows businesses are reinforcing existing racial and gender biases by using algorithms based on outdated data and decisions. This risks increasing inequalities and unfair privileges. The dark side wins. When Olivier Toutain asked me to participate in the special issue on entrepreneurial finance, I was naturally interested to look for solutions rather than reflections. Not finding solutions in existing literature on the dark side of entrepreneurial finance, especially solutions based on an analysis of human nature as a root cause, I searched in other disciplines.
So, in my quest, I looked at social entrepreneurs who are using artificial intelligence to solve society’s problems. The person at the top of the list from my search on the Ashoka website was Gilda E. Henriquez Darlas. Amazingly, she had worked in artificial intelligence and had moved to social entrepreneurship to work on consciousness and the regulation of the dark side, so that decisions can be more altruistic…

While working in artificial intelligence for large institutions, Gilda H. Darlas found that the use of algorithms exacerbated social inequalities generated by the financial models of banks. These social inequalities had resulted from decisions based on past data and negative emotions, thereby perpetuating the dark side of entrepreneurial finance. She therefore spent years studying how to resolve this problem. It was clear that the problem needed to be attacked at its roots: by shifting the mindset of young people away from greed toward altruism.

Interview with
Gilda H. Darlas
Dr Gilda Darlas, holds British and Mexican nationality. She got her first degree in computer science and a master in artificial intelligence in Spain. During research regarding a long-standing question of decision-making in artificial intelligence with IBM she went to India to pursue further knowledge about human experience. In Varanasi University she learned about Indian philosophy and Buddhism and became fascinated by their formal systems of human consciousness and human experience. Such findings made her change career in order to design her first prototype in ethical education. She became a social entrepreneur and began implementing her methodology, named EUDE, in schools around the globe. She has published three books in Spanish and one in English, and 28 guides about EUDE’s methodology in Spanish and English. Much later, after earning a degree in comparative religious studies and philosophy at Lancaster University and a master in human experience at Hong Kong University, she earned her doctorate degree of philosophy in religious studies through which she located the conceptual and philosophical framework of her initiative within the fields of humanities and character education.
