Based on participatory research of the practices and representations of young people in distressed neighborhoods, this article examines the contributions and limitations of a participatory methodology from the point of view of scientific production. What does participation do to social scientific research? How does it question its methodological and epistemological principles, the construction of knowledge and its nature? To what extent is it heuristically stimulating from this point of view?
